Examinees who do not pass the exam by January 15, 2027, may be required to submit a new application, due to upcoming system upgrades. Candidates are advised to retain a copy of their exam approval notification for future reference.

To become certified as an Engineer-In-Training in Washington
- Take and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam with NCEES
- Meet the requirements of Chapter 196-20 WAC
- A bachelor's degree in an ABET or CEAB accredited engineering curriculum
OR - 4 years of experience (education, work experience, or combination of both)
- A bachelor's degree in an ABET or CEAB accredited engineering curriculum
Option 1: Education
- If you have a bachelor's degree in an ABET accredited or CEAB accredited engineering curriculum, have your school submit official transcripts to NCEES.
- If you have a CEAB accredited degree, a foreign degree evaluation is not required
- If you have a CEAB accredited degree, a foreign degree evaluation is not required
- If you have a non-ABET accredited engineering degree from a foreign country, have your degree evaluated by NCEES Credentials Evaluations. The evaluation is performed at your expense, and you're responsible for submitting information to NCEES.

Option 2: Experience
- Complete and submit our Work Experience Form and Experience Verification Form (see forms for instructions).
- If you have a combination of education and experience, have your school submit official transcripts to NCEES
- Ensure your verifier’s email is correct and they can access it. If the verifier or email is incorrect, you must submit a new Work Experience form. Staff cannot change this information after submission.
After you pass the exam
to obtain a certification as an EIT in Washington submit a certification application to the board that shows you meet the requirements listed in Chapter 196-20 WAC. You will be notified via email when your EIT certificate has been issued.
