On-Site Inspector

Examinees who do not pass the exam by January 15, 2027, may be required to submit a new application, due to upcoming system upgrades. Candidates are advised to retain a copy of their exam approval notification for future reference.

On-Site Inspector Certificate of Competency

All applicants are required to take the On-Site Wastewater Treatment Systems Designers exam. To be considered for approval you must submit a complete application to the board office.

If you have a certificate of competency, you may perform on-site design services for local health jurisdictions, but may not practice as a licensed on-site designer.
 

Application Requirements

  • Employment at a local health jurisdiction
  • One year of practical work experience under the direct supervision of a certificate of competency holder, licensed designer or Professional Engineer.
  • A written request for certification from your Local Health Director or designee
  • A passing score (80%) on the Washington On-Site Law Review
  • A passing score on the written On-Site Designer License Exam
     

Required Documentation

  1. Complete the On-Site Wastewater Treatment System Inspector Certificate of Competency Application 
  2. Pay your fee (see form directions)
  3. Complete the Work Experience Form and Experience Verification Form (see forms for instructions)
  4. Have the director/director designee of the Health Department/Jurisdiction sign the DOH request for Examination form and submit it with your application
  5. Pass the Washington On-Site Law Review
