Examinees who do not pass the exam by January 15, 2027, may be required to submit a new application, due to upcoming system upgrades. Candidates are advised to retain a copy of their exam approval notification for future reference.

To become certified as a Land Surveyor-In-Training in Washington
- Take and pass the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam with NCEES
- Meet the requirements of Chapter 196-21 WAC
- A bachelor's degree in an ABET accredited surveying curriculum
OR - 4 years of experience (education, work experience, or combination of both)
- A bachelor's degree in an ABET accredited surveying curriculum
Option 1: Education
- If you have a bachelor's degree in an ABET-accredited surveying program, have your school submit official transcripts to NCEES.
Option 2: Experience or Combination
- If you have 4 years of board-approved work experience, complete and submit our Work Experience Form and Experience Verification Form (see forms for instructions).
- Ensure your verifier’s email is correct and they can access it. If the verifier or email is incorrect, you must submit a new Work Experience form. Staff cannot change this information after submission.

- If you have a 2-year associate degree in a board-approved surveying program, have your school submit official transcripts to NCEES. You must also provide 2 years of board-approved work experience.
- Completion of a 2-year surveying program may count toward the 4-year requirement.
After you pass the exam
To obtain a certification as a Land Surveyor-In-Training in Washington you must submit a certification application to the board that shows you meet the requirements listed in WAC 196-21-010. You will be notified via email when your LSIT certificate has been issued.
