Engineer-in-Training Certificate

Requirements

Before you apply for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, you must have one of the following:

  • A bachelor's degree in an accredited engineering curriculum.
  • Senior standing in an accredited engineering curriculum.
  • 4 years of experience (education, work experience, or both).

If you have a baccalaureate degree or have achieved senior standing in an ABET accredited or CEAB accredited engineering curriculum, you may register for the exam at the NCEES website

Don't have an ABET accredited degree and are applying by experience or a combination of education and experience

Complete the Engineer-in-Training Long Form Registration Application.

  • Send pages 1-2 to:

  • Send  the Experience Description and Verification to the people verifying your work experience.
    • The verifier must complete their portion and return it to you in a sealed enveloped across the flap.  Don’t open the sealed envelope.  Or the verifier can email the form to engineers@brpels.wa.gov but it must come directly from the verifier’s email address.

Don't have an ABET approved degree and are applying by other education (such as a master's degree in engineering or foreign degree,)

If you have a non-ABET accredited engineering degree from a foreign country you must have your degree evaluated by NCEES Credentials Evaluations before applying for the exam. This evaluation will be performed at your expense, and you're responsible for submitting all necessary information to the evaluation service.

If you have a baccalaureate degree in engineering that is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), an evaluation by NCEES is not necessary. 

How to get Certified as an engineer-in-training

If you want to be certified as an engineer-in-training in Washington, you must submit the certification application. Certificates are issued only to those applicants that designated Washington as their practice state when they registered to take the fundamentals of engineering exam.
